We are sure with all the things needed to get done before the holidays, caring for your residence foundation repair is the last thing in mind. But while working around the house and setting up the Christmas lights, you may take the opportunity to do a few things that will help you get through the season without negatively impacting your residence’s foundations.
- Gut check. Gutters are the most important method or removing excess wafer from around the perimeter of the foundation. Most people don’t realize how much water is collected by the roof while it is raining. A 2,000 sq. ft. residential roof will collect around 1,200 gallons of water per each 1″ of rain. Over a thousand gallons of water for each 1″ of rain is an enormous amount of water that will end up too close to the foundations if not removed properly by the gutters and downspout. Check for blockage due to recently fallen leaves and other obstructions that will prevent the proper functioning of the gutters.
- Trees and bushes. Since you are wrapping them with lights, this maybe a good time to inspect the root systems and closeness of the vegetation to the residence’s foundations. Large trees and grown bushes with large root systems can create issues by drawing too much water from the clay supporting the foundations. If possible install root barrier to prevent foundation damage.
